Everyone in some way or another rewrites their own personal history. Its usually the little things…the stories we tell, little white lies and tall tales. Most keep generally along truthful lines, filling in gaps of memory or embellishing here and there. Its natural. Everyone does it. But then there are those whose need to rewrite their own personal history is more intense and ugly. They are rewriting entire swaths of time, not just embellishing but creating the past. If you are not part of that back story it would be hard to differentiate between the truth and the lies - the tales are so realistic and believable. But if you are, those same stories become hateful or ugly or vengeful or in many cases psychotic. Mental illness takes form in many ways and often the most subtle sicknesses are the hardest to endure. When it takes the form of a constant inability to “let go” and a relentless need to rewrite the past it becomes unbearable. Sometimes the best solution is to run away but in this age of easy contact, the global and fast nature of communication, that is almost impossible. I suppose there is no real way out. Let them rewrite their history (and yours too if you are involved) and just turn away. See it for what it is. Know that the people who matter in your life are not so easily fooled.
I am too busy writing my future to spend so much energy rewriting my past.
